Mary Hopkin - Those Were The Days (1968)

Η Mary Hopkin  είναι μια Ουαλλή φολκ τραγουδίστρια που έγινε γνωστή το 1968 για το Νο.1 single "Those Were The Days", και  ήταν μια από τους πρώτους καλλιτέχνες που υπέγραψαν με την εταιρία Apple των Beatles.

Γεννήθηκε στο Pontardawe στις 3 Μαϊου του 1950, από  Ουαλλόφωνη  οικογένεια.
Έκανε μαθήματα μουσικής και τραγουδιού από την παιδική της ηλικία κι άρχισε τη μουσική καριέρα της με ένα τοπικό συγκρότημα που ονομαζόταν The Selby Set & Mary με τους οποίους ηχογράφησε ένα EP στην Ουαλλική γλώσσα.

Έλαβε μέρος στο talent show “Opportunity Knocks” της Βρετανικής τηλεόρασης, όπου και νίκησε.  Εκεί την είδε το μοντέλο Twiggy και την πρότεινε στον Paul McCartney.

Έτσι υπέγραψε με την Apple και το πρώτο της single “Those Were The Days” κυκλοφόρησε στις 20 Αυγούστου του 1968 σε παραγωγή του McCartney. Έφτασε στο Νο.1 στα Βρετανικά Charts και Νο.2 στο Αμερικανικό Billboard. Μόνο στις ΗΠΑ πούλησε πάνω από 1,5 εκατομμύριο αντίτυπα, και παγκοσμίως έφτασε τα 8.000.000.

Το "Those Were the Days" είναι ουσιαστικά ένα ρώσικο ρομαντικό τραγούδι που μιλάει για τη νιότη και τον ιδεαλισμό. Είχε τον τίτλο "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" (By the long road),  σύνθεση του Boris Fomin σε στίχους του ποιητή  Konstantin Podrevskii. Οι πρώτες εκτελέσεις ήταν από τη Γεωργιανή Tamara Tsereteli το 1925 και τον Ρώσσο Alexander Vertinsky το 1926.
Τελικά το τραγούδι έμεινε στην ιστορία από την εκτέλεση της Mary Hopkin και «χρεώνεται» στον Gene Raskin, παρότι έγραψε μόνο τους Αγγλικούς στίχους.
